Will Captain America die?

Captain America is the closest thing the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to a soul. He’s the moral compass, the man who says “I can do this all day” through a broken body and a bloody mouth, the standard everyone else is quietly measured against. Killing Captain America isn’t just killing a character - it’s a statement. So this question carries more weight than almost any other in the film. And here’s the twist that makes it genuinely tricky: Doomsday has two Captain Americas. Before you can ask “will Cap die,” you have to ask which one.

It’s worth remembering how much that shield already carries. Steve Rogers wielded it across nearly eighty years of in-universe time - through a world war, a frozen exile, a civil war among his own friends, and the last stand against Thanos. When he finally set it down and pressed it into Sam Wilson’s hands, he wasn’t just passing a prop; he was passing the entire moral weight of what the Avengers are meant to stand for. That lineage is the thing Doomsday is now playing with.

Sam Wilson: probably safe

Start with the current one. Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is the active Captain America - the man who caught the shield Steve handed him, agonised over whether he had the right to carry it, and ultimately decided he did. Marvel spent an entire Disney+ series and a feature film building Sam into the role. You do not construct a new Captain America that painstakingly, over that many hours of screen time, only to kill him in the setup half of a two-part finale. Doing so would torch years of groundwork and strip the post-saga MCU of its moral anchor exactly when it needs one most. Expect Sam to be pushed to the absolute brink - a costly, heroic, last-stand near-miss - but expect him to walk away with the shield still on his arm.

Old Steve Rogers: the one to fear for

Now the other one, and this is where it turns ominous. The December 2025 teaser confirmed that Chris Evans is back - and pointedly not as a flashback. This is the elderly, retired Steve Rogers from the very end of Endgame: the man who travelled back in time to live the full life he’d sacrificed, who danced with Peggy Carter in a world without war. And the film has given him a wife and a child.

Sit with that setup, because it is a loaded gun on the mantelpiece. Marvel does not drag a beloved legend out of a hard-won happy ending, place a family at his side, and then march him onto a multiversal battlefield unless it means to break your heart with him. A final, sacrificial stand from the original Captain America - the man who already gave everything once, now asked to do it again - is exactly the kind of devastating, full-circle gut-punch the Russo brothers live for.

There’s an added layer of cruelty available here. Steve isn’t just a hero in this film - he’s a husband and a father now. Every beat he’s in comes pre-loaded with the question the marketing keeps hinting at: what is a man with a family doing back on a battlefield he already earned the right to leave? That tension is precisely the kind of thing the Russos build a sacrifice around. And if Steve falls, it recontextualises Sam’s entire arc in a single stroke - the new Captain America watching the old one die would be the definitive passing of the torch, the moment Sam stops carrying a borrowed shield and starts carrying his own. It would also close a loop the MCU has left dangling since 2019: Steve’s quiet retirement was a beautiful ending, but it happened off-screen, and fans never got to say goodbye to him in the moment. Doomsday offers a chance to give the original a real send-off - on the battlefield, surrounded by the heroes who inherited his cause. Tempting storytelling. Ominous for Steve.

The likely play

So the shape reads like this:

• Sam Wilson: endangered, survives, carries the shield and the name into the rebuilt MCU.
• Old Steve Rogers: the single strongest emotional-sacrifice candidate in the entire film.

As always in a story stitched from variants and incursions, even a death can carry an asterisk - reality is being rewritten, and nothing is quite as final as it first appears. But if you’re steeling yourself for a Captain America to fall in Doomsday, keep your eyes on the old man in the cardigan, not the one with the wings.

Our call: possible - and it hinges entirely on which Cap. Sam almost certainly lives. Steve is one of the most exposed names on the whole board (who dies). If you love the old man, this may be the film where you have to let him go.
